- A 2,500 L tank holds 2–3 days of water for a family of four, which is what most homes choose. One or two people are usually fine with 500–1,000 L; large households or week-long outages may want 5,000 L.
- Do I need a permit to install a water tank?
- No. A backup tank needs no drilling, no municipal notification and no geological assessment — it's the lowest-risk water fix and is usually installed in a single day.
- Will my tank still give water during load-shedding?
- Yes. Add a small solar- or battery-backed pressure pump and your taps keep running even when both the power and the municipal supply are off.
- Is water stored in a tank safe to drink?
- Kept clean, yes. Tanks should be drained, scrubbed and sanitised about once a year (from ~R450) to stop algae and biofilm, and we can build a SANS 241 water test and the right filter into your plan.
